2012-2013 Disaster Relief – Nigeria

Flood Relief Efforts in Cross River State, Nigeria

In response to the 2012 flood which displaced 79,000 people in Cross River State, ENA-USA organized a nationwide effort disaster relief effort. The communities most affected were Biase, Ikom, Ogoja and Odukpani local government areas where lives were lost, property destroyed and infrastructure devastated. Under the direction of Dr. Felicia Bassey-Akamune, Health/Wellness Committee Chairperson, Regional Coordinators were identified and shipments from around the US were consolidated through the following Efik sons and daughters:

Dallas – Mr. Francis Ironbar                                Houston – Dr. Veronica Okon
Nevada – Chief (Prof.) Rosemary Effiong               New York – Mr. Sam Okon Eniang
Washington D.C. – Dr. Felicia Bassey-Akamune

In November 2012, 7 barrels of medications, clothing and shoes were shipped to the palace of the Obong of Calabar for distribution to the impacted communities.

Additional Relief Efforts

  • In March 2013, 11 large boxes of medications, clothing and shoes were shipped to Calabar to aid the flood victims.
  • In August 2013, the Youth Wing plan to send a monetary donation to the flood victims from their current raffle ticket sales.
